In-Person Educator Workshops

IN-PERSON | EDUCATOR WORKSHOPS | SUMMER 2022

Ready, Set, Code! Teaching the new Ontario coding curriculum

Get prepared for the new Ontario coding curriculum by building skills, knowledge and confidence.

University of Toronto Engineering Outreach is excited to offer a week of free, in-person coding workshops for grade 1-8 teachers. These will be fun, interactive and hands-on introductions to coding aimed at demystifying the new coding curriculum for Ontario teachers. Participants will learn the basic commands and terms associated with coding and have the new curriculum broken down grade by grade. Teachers will then be given the opportunity to apply these principles in two hands-on workshops, one using Dash and Dot robots and the other exploring a variety of digital coding resources available free for in-class and at-home use. Through this workshop, teachers will gain a beginner's understanding of coding concepts, build confidence with the basic principles associated with coding and get familiar with online coding resources and tools that will immediately assist them in the classroom. We hope to see you and your colleagues for these fun and engaging day-long sessions!

Through these workshops, you will:

  • Be connected with an evolving community of educators.
  • Provided with materials, lesson plans and real-world examples of both plugged and unplugged instruction in coding.
  • Ongoing support after the sessions to keep you and your students challenged.

Who Are These Workshops For?

These workshops are for Ontario educators. They were designed for both complete beginners looking to get a handle on these new elements, as well as those with coding experience who want concrete suggestions and examples of how it can be used in classrooms. These sessions will feature material for both in-person and remote learning configurations.

These sessions are aimed primarily at teachers. We will be offering modified sessions for parents who want to learn more about the new coding curriculum. They can be found on our Parents' Workshops page.

Please note: while our day-long, in-person workshops will cover much of the same material as those offered in Winter 2021, participants will have the opportunity to apply the principals of coding to some hands-on activities—such as using Dash robots and trying out different online coding resources—all with enthusiastic participation of peers and knowledgeable instructors!
