Leadership & Management of Innovation in Engineering User-Centred Design Foundations of Project Management & Entrepeneurship

The MBA (or Master of Business Administration) attracts individuals from a range of professional disciplines and has become the gold standard for those seeking management roles. A strong foundation in business basics is often deemed an engineer’s best tool. Courses in this stream will focus on project management and professional skill building, investigating relevant case studies in industry and guiding principles in entrepreneurship. You will experience first-hand how engineers use strategic analysis and project management in engineering design and practice. This is a great opportunity to learn and apply solid business skills that will further your future career as an engineer and in any role in a business environment.

MBA-1 | Leadership & Management of Innovation in Engineering

Week 1 (8–12 July 2013)

Ever dreamed of being the next Mark Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs and developing something so innovative that it changes the way people interact with technology? Leading innovation in a new market takes more than just an idea; it requires foresight, an understanding of what people need, the strategic vision to make it happen, and the confidence and ability to convince others to buy into it. This course will examine how to develop and maintain your own competitive edge, identify and develop areas of opportunity, and lead innovation in your field as an entrepreneurial startup or large global corporation. Through case studies, hands-on simulation activities and guest lectures, students will develop an understanding of self and corporate innovation and be better able to apply their team and self-leadership skills to create innovation in their day-to-day lives.

Due to the nature of this course, both junior and senior students will be accepted.

MBA-2 | User-Centred Design

Week 2 (15–19 July 2013)

What makes us enjoy using technology? What makes us frustrated? How can we properly take users into consideration when designing? How could a user-centred design (UCD) approach make a technology more attractive? This course explores the importance of UCD principles used by leading practitioners in the industry (such as Apple and Google). Students will conduct a field study at the Royal Ontario Museum, where they will design and evaluate an application geared towards museum visitors (no programming required). Through student research demos, psychology labs, games, and hands-on design and evaluation activities, students will gain a strong understanding of the UCD process.

MBA-3 | Foundations of Project Management & Entrepreneurship

Week 3 (22–26 July 2013)

During this 5-day course, students will become familiar with the principles of managing a project and business by implementing two projects in teams. The tools and processes presented in this course can be used in planning and implementing any daily activity, allowing students to adapt them for real-world use.
