Summer 2021 Girls' Online Junior Coding Workshops

The Girls Online Coding Programs offer an immersive virtual experience to master the basics of coding in classes of only girls. This program works to increase student understanding of digital skills while reinforcing creativity, as it draws upon the engineering design process, making intentional connections to math and science. Participants are introduced to several coding languages and explore how to create their own programs, with an emphasis on coding logic, programming functionality, and theory. This program is offered online to students in grades 6-8.

Students will have the opportunity to choose between three (3) different virtual workshops: HTML/CSS, Python, and Tinkercad: Virtual Circuits.1 The workshops are led by current undergraduate students who will explore the topic by guided activities, and applying the engineering design process in a virtual environment. These workshops are designed for beginners and no prior coding experience is required.2

Each of the topics is explored in an independent curriculum which takes place over three days - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Participants must be available for all three (3) days over which the workshop takes place as concepts and material will be built upon from the previous day.

Overview of Workshops

Each workshop includes coding activities that can be conducted from the comfort of your own home!

These workshops are for students in grades 6-8. They are designed for beginners, and no prior coding experience is required.

Please note: the workshops consist of the same content every week. As such, As such, we highly recommend that students only register for one of the date ranges offered for each coding topic

HTML/CSS—Level 1

In this interactive Website Creation course, students will be creating their own customized web pages by learning the basics of popular industry-standard tools to such as HTML and CSS.

Please note: the HTML/CSS Coding Workshops may be similar in content to our Winter and Spring 2021 Coding Workshops. If you have previously attended our coding workshops, we encourage you to choose the Level 1 Python workshop, or Tinkercad workshop, or our Python Level 2 workshops, or our HTML/CSS Level 2 workshops.

  • July 2 – July 4, 2021: Friday, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM and Saturday & Sunday, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM 
  • July 9 – July 11, 2021: Friday, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM and Saturday & Sunday, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM 
  • July 16 – July 18, 2021: Friday, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM and Saturday & Sunday, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Python—Level 1

During this interactive Python course, students will dive into the basics of Python (variables, conditional statements, and loops!), build their knowledge-base, and work to create a game that will let you, the user, play against the computer and keep score!

If you have previously attended our coding workshops, we encourage you to choose the HTML/CSS Level 1 workshops, Tinkercad workshops or our Python Level 2 workshops, or our HTML/CSS Level 2 workshops.

Tinkercad: Circuits and Code

Students will use Tinkercad (an online 3D modelling program) to learn about 3D graphical modelling using the Arduino platform. They will learn how to set up the virtual kit, and how to interact with the circuit simulator with code. By the end of the course, students will work to combine their knowledge of hardware and circuitry with coding and software to create multiple unique virtual projects!

Please note: the Tinkercad Workshops may be similar in content to our Winter and Spring 2021 Coding Workshops. If you have previously attended our coding workshops, we encourage you to choose the Level 1 HTML/CSS or Level 1 Python, or Python workshops, or our HTML/CSS Level 2 workshops.

$165 per three-day workshop.

General Information


Technology Required:

Students will be required to use Google Classroom for this workshop. If you are able to attend the program, our team will be following up with the classroom invitation on the Thursday prior to the start date. Please keep in mind that you will be required to use a @gmail account to access the classroom. School-issued emails are not compatible with our google classroom. Materials & Preparation:

Activity instructions, guidelines, and material lists will be sent out on the Thursday before the start date in the form of Student Activity Sheets, which are 1-2 pages of instructions to help students prepare and conduct the workshop. Guardians are asked to kindly read over and gather the materials for their child ahead of time. 

Video Permission:

We understand that there is a possibility that a student may accidentally activate the camera on their device. As such, while we will not be using this content for any media-related purposes, we do require all participants to consent to the possibility of being photographed and/or filmed.

Waitlist:

If you see that a course is waitlisted on the registration page, that means there are no available spaces. If a space opens up in the course, those on the waitlist will be notified immediately in the order that they registered.

Creating an Active Account:

If this is your first time registering for one of our programs, you will be prompted to create an Active account as you register. If you are successful in getting a spot in the workshop, your spot will be held for you as you complete the registration form, so no need to rush.

Please note that it is not possible to create an account before the registration date.

Cancellation Policy:

A refund or a credit, less a $35.00 administrative fee is available for cancellation requests received by 5:00 PM ET on the Monday before the session start date.
