Online Junior Programming

Online Junior Workshops
Each workshop includes hands-on, discovery-based science and engineering activities that can be conducted in the comfort of your own home! Every workshop is led by two of our instructors who will also be sure to explore the theory behind each of the activities all while promoting student engagement and fun. You can expect workshops that integrate various topics within science and engineering including chemistry, space, and forces.
Grades: We offer workshops for students in Grades 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8
Dates: July 20th - August 21st
*As a result of the Civic Holiday, no workshops will be held on August 3rd.
Participants are required to sign up for individual sessions.
*Please note, the workshops repeat each week. As such, if you participate in a workshop week one, we highly recommend that you do not sign up for the same workshop in additional weeks.
Schedule:
15 mins | Log-in, say hello, meet your instructor
60 mins | Program time – Lesson and Activity
15 mins | Q&A
*Please see below for start times for each workshop
Cost:
$35 per workshop
Grades 3/4 Program Descriptions
Mondays 10:45 AM–12:15 PM
Students will learn about the science behind pulleys and their importance in a device that take us to the next level—an elevator!
Grades 5/6 Program Descriptions
Tuesdays 1:30 PM–3:00 PM
Wednesday 10:45 AM–12:15 PM
Students will build their own kaleidoscope to learn about the science behind light. They will learn about light rays reflecting and how that creates the beautiful, repeating pattern seen when looking into the kaleidoscope.
Fridays 10:45 AM–12:15 PM
Students will be building and testing a working trebuchet to see how far it can project an object. Here, they will learn about forces, gravity and how to build a stable structure.
Grades 7/8 Program Descriptions
Mondays 1:00 PM–2:30 PM
Students will create a prosthetic arm using cardboard and functions using their fingers which represents the nerves in a real prosthetic arm. Students will be challenged to lift objects with their prosthetic arms. The material covered will include the anatomy of a neuron, types of neurons, electrical impulses, and how prosthetic arms work.
Wednesday 1:00 PM–2:30 PM
In this activity, students will understand how the design of rovers (and other exploratory vehicles) differ from those of traditional vehicles and the things engineers must consider in designs that work on other planets.
Fridays 1:00 PM–2:30 PM
Students will design a pulley system that would be able to lift an object/weight and make a support structure that would be able to freely suspend the pulley in the air. The topics that will be covered are mechanical engineering and forces.
Jr. Coding Programs
Please note that the material covered in phases 1 & 2 of our Jr. Coding Programs are very similar to the content covering in this phase of programming.
Grade 5/6 - Online Coding Program
Each workshop includes coding activities that can be conducted from the comfort of your own home! Every workshop is led by two of our instructors who will explore two (2) different coding languages (HTML and CSS) followed by an activity, all while promoting student engagement and fun. These workshops are designed for beginners and no prior coding experience is required.
Unlike our Grade 3/4 and 5/6 workshops, these workshops are NOT individual sessions. Participants should be available for all three (3) workshops offered throughout the week as concepts/material will be built off from the last lesson.*
*Please note that workshops repeat each week. As such, we highly recommend that you do not sign up for additional weeks.
