IDEA: Horizons

A program grounded in Land-based learning and intended for Indigenous children and youth interested in exploring STEM and making connections to the Land.
The IDEA: Horizons program is an Indigenous-led program for Indigenous students in Grades 3-6 grounded in Land-based learning.
This fun, unique program explores STEM concepts while making connections to the Land. Participants will engage with traditional and cultural knowledge to explore cutting-edge topics in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), through a wide-range of engaging hands-on activities. Participants will also explore the University of Toronto's St George campus with an engaging team of Instructors. Our instructors are current undergraduate and graduate students who will share their experiences and excitement for learning.
This program is offered as two, one-week sessions; note that the activities offered in the first week of the program will be repeated in the second week.
This program is offered to students who have completed Grades 3-6 (2022/2023 academic year).
Program Highlights

Participants will explore fun, hands-on and experiential Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) activities that will introduce participants to the connections between Indigenous Knowledge and STEM.

Find a community of peers while having fun and forming lifelong friendships.

Learn from the brightest! The program will be taught by a team of Indigenous post-secondary students and graduates.

Application Requirements
Open to Ontario Indigenous students in the 2022/23 school year.
To be eligible for the IDEA-Horizons program students must meet the following requirements :
- Students must identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit).
- Students must be currently in grades 3-6 of the 2022-2023 school year.
Creating an Active Account
If this is your first time registering for one of our programs, you will be prompted to create an Active account as you register. If you are successful in getting a spot in the workshop, your spot will be held for you as you complete the registration form, so no need to rush.
Please note that it is not possible to create an account before the registration date.
Cost
FREE – all program costs will be covered by the University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. Any travel-associated costs will be the responsibility of the participant. Travel bursaries will be available for those that qualify for support.
Cancellation Policy
We kindly ask that if you need to cancel your registration, please let us know before the summer start date in order for us to reach out to any participants on our waiting list.
