Full Description

Through a uniquely Indigenous lens, participants engage with traditional and cultural knowledge, learn about STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math), and work with our team to share their enthusiasm for leadership and learning with a broad audience. This program is offered as a two-week overnight Land-based program in mid-July at our camp near Minden ON.

The IDEA (Indigenous Design and Engineering Academy) LIT (Leader-In-Training)  is an Indigenous-led program grounded in Land-based learning. The program is designed for Indigenous secondary students who are interested in exploring leadership concepts and taking on community-serving leadership roles. Participants will engage with traditional and cultural knowledge, learn about STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math), and work with our team to share their enthusiasm for leadership and learning with a broad audience. Participants will be supported in exploring connections between Indigenous Land-based knowledge systems and STEM related activities.

The LIT program is excellent preparation for participants interested in taking on instructional or advisory roles with the Engineering Outreach Office. Participants are eligible to apply for paid Mentor roles for our IDEA: Horizons program for children and youth during August 2023.

Successful Ontario secondary students will earn a high school credit. This Grade 11 course, Leadership and Peer Support (GPP3O), focuses on the development of critical interpersonal skills and promotes student participation in both school and community life.

*As this is a for-credit program, participants should also anticipate being available for course meetings in the first and last week of July. These will be held virtually.
